CompTIA Security+ Updates Exam Objectives

The updated CompTIA Security+ (2008 Edition) exam will launch October 2008. CompTIA Security+ is an international, vendor-neutral certification that validates knowledge of access control, assessments and audits, cryptography, network infrastructure, organizational security and systems security.

The topics covered on the updated version were reorganized and made more reflective of current security issues and knowledge requirements. Two new objectives, Access Control and Assessments and Audits, were also added to the exam to emphasize a “know how to” approach rather than to simply “know” or “recognize.”

Many organizations that span a variety of industries contributed to the development of the new exam through an industry-wide Job Task Analysis (JTA). The skills and knowledge developed for the updated exam are validated by an industry-wide global survey.

Brett Knight, manager of Information Technology (IT) at Embraer Aircraft, one of the largest aircraft manufacturers in the world, is a subject matter expert (SME) who participated in the JTA to develop the new exam. Knight said the changes were needed to better match with the changes that have occurred in network and IT security areas.

“Technology changes at a rapid rate, and so should the knowledge that is required to be an effective professional in the field,” Knight said. “There is no better example of this than in IT security. As threats and attacks have progressed and evolved, there is a need to refresh the knowledge level needed to be a professional in the industry.”

As an international company with a focus on commercial, defense, and executive aviation, Embraer takes a centralized approach to IT management policy and continuity. These procedures are then applied at a regional and local level.

The current version of CompTIA Security+ (2007 Edition) will be available through April 2009. Candidates who are preparing for the CompTIA Security+ exam should complete their studies and certify on CompTIA Security+ (2007 Edition).
