Consolidation Of Ccna And Inro Exams Taken By Members And Their Experience And Areas On Exams

This is a consolidation of members experience on the CCNA and INTRO exam and areas on their exams. A big thanks to the members who have provided this information.

After all the stress over ISDN, I didn’t even get asked a thing on it! Not to say that it won’t come up though?!
And I had a question on NAT! Which I knew the answer thanks to the help I got here the other day!

(simulations)
Well I have only done 2 Cisco tests, which 1 sim on each, but from what I recall they are more based on a scenario. For example, they will present you with a network and say that host A cannot ping host B, with 2 routers between them. Then it is up to you to log into those routers and kind of figure out what is wrong (usually setting up IPs, Routes, Etc).
I do remember it was more like troubleshooting, e.g. host A can’t ping host B?
You won’t have access to all commands also.

I practised lots of subnetting questions but in the actual exam there were very few. There were many questions on VLANs and switches, the dreaded feeling in my stomach kept increasing further into the exam.

Design & Support- 100%
Implentation & Operation- 52%
Technology- 73%

The router sims single handidly sunk me. The ones I had were harder and more compicated than anything I would have imagined based on the sims I practiced with. One of the questisons was a 5 part question, that required you to first set up the toplogy then set up the IP addresses, but it was alot more complicated thatn it sounds. In addition, I thought I was moving too slow, panicked, and skipped part of the sim questions in order to finisht he test. Turns out, my last 15 questions were all multiple choice, so i flew through that and finished with 20 mins left. Time managment was definitly an issue for me. A woman testing in the same room kept getting up and walking in and out of the room during my sim questiosn, further clouding my mind of the commands.

(intro exam)
I anticipated more one line questions from which I’d gain time but nooooo. Lots of switch questions (VLAN’s) and even though I used Cisco’s practice exams on their site, I lost time figuring out how to work the sims. I was not exspecting alot of STP on the test.

(switches on the ccna)
took the test last week of May. If you are talking about the sims question, I only encountered the 12.1(or later) version of IOS which is on 2950.

Even the drag & drop type questions(commands) I encountered are from the 12.1 or later IOS version
———————————————
(intro)
design and support 100
implementation and operation 90
technology 93
and a simlet where you had to drag appropriate cables/networking devices onto a network diagram to complete it
and then you had to use the router sim to determine certain info needed to configure the devices you dragged onto it. does that make any sense?
also had a question in five parts where you had to determine certain info from a router sim

(intro)
Design and Support 100%
Implementation and Operation 71%
Technology 86%
There were 2 simulators and about 3 drag and drops the rest were multiple choice.. 42 questions with a time limit of 75 mins.
Know your subnetting well.. Study the output of the commands, show ip route, show ip interface, show controllers, show cdp neighbors many answers to questions from the outputs of these commands…

(intro)
i also had the configure ip addresses plus cable types (drags) sim. Like the other posts said, but you cant stress this enough, you wont survive this exam without knowing how to subnet. A lot is IOS based, startup sequence, backing up / restoring configurations/flash images. What else…WAN encapsulation ofcourse, HDLC,PPP. One question that showed the back of a router with aux, serial, and a BRI…

Just prepare youself for any type of troubleshooting scenario (OSPF, RIP, and EIGRP in particular), NAT configuration, and basic network connectivity (things such as IP addresses, shutdown commands on interfaces, misconfigurations, etc).

Again a relatively easy sim and only 1, again im starting to doubt the random(ness) of the exams because it too described stuff i’ve heard here. Excuse the grammar, im foreign, whats your excuse . Subnetting i’ve got down so that wasn’t the prob, some was worked into it ofcourse. NAT/PAT questions a lot on VTP/VLAN stuff. a drag and drop with ip route 0.0.0.0 0.0.0.0 to something… default route right… then another 4 with ip route whatever. some.some then 255.255.0.0 or 255.255.255.0….you had to pick the destinations….

(ccna)
It was the same as most people described, where you telnet into 1 router, then into another. I was in both routers and all the IPs looked good, able to ping each other and the hosts, but the hosts couldn’t ping each other. I had no idea what to do and time was running out so I had to move on.

Lots of ACL questions got me too

I was very surprised to see only ONE router sim on the test — and the sim problem I had was very easy (configuring correct ip addresses for interfaces, test connectivity between hosts). This involved me setting up a serial interface, telnetting into a remote router, and then configuring the LAN interface for that network. Overall, this question was pretty easy.

There were a lot of questions that involved knowing which subnet was correct/ which addresses were valid for hosts. Again, know subnetting or you will do poorly on this test.

Other questions I saw included:

NAT Overloading
Upgrading IOS on a router
Cabling question (rollover vs straight-through)
Differences between transparent/server/client setting for VTP
A few questions on OSPF/EIGRP
A few questions on access-lists and best practices
Various questions on commands (cdp neighbor, show ip protocols, etc).
————————————————————-
(intro)
I had 1 question that took me 15mins, it was a drop and drag, with a terminal prompt. It was a LAN and you had to drag where a router or switch would go, and then log into them to find all the IPs, then drag the IPs to each interface. ON TOP of that, there were some interfaces you that did not display an IP, and you had to figure them out based on the subnets they were on vs the hosts on the lan. It was ugly.

My suggestions for people looking to take this test

-Know IOS commands 100%. I would say 80% the test was something regarding the IOS, either outputs you had to read, commands it asked would be used, lots of drag and drop.
-Know subnetting. There were only a couple direct subnetting questions, but lots of questions elsewhere when subnetting would be “part” of the question
-Know IOS boot process
-Switching basics, when to use crossover vs straighthrough

Again, know the IOS.

(ccna)
I only had 1 sim and about 2 or 3 NAT questions. There was a suprising amount about switching on the exam. There were also alot of diagram questions
———————————————-
(intro)
My test consisted of 42 questions. The score required to pass was an 825, I got a 933 (out of 1000). I had 75 minutes to complete the test, and I took about an hour to complete the test.

My test was very heavy on IOS commands, subnetting, and the boot process of the IOS (including the config register). I’d say about 75% of my test consisted of these questions. Other questions I saw were on T1 connection types, switching/routing (L2 and L3 addressing), differences in half/full duplex, differences in hubs/switches, and connectivity troubleshooting.

The area I know I missed points on was the “Simlet” portion of the test — a question with 5 parts to it. I know my mind went blank for one of the required tasks, and can’t even remember what it asked of me to do. It was something I studied, but for some reason I just couldn’t remember the command to do it.

That said, the test really had me nervous…some of the questions asked requiired only 2 or 3 choices, where many of the remaining choices not selected were technically correct, but not the “best” answer. This had me second-guessing my selected choices, but I went with my gut feeling.

I definitely benefitted from taking my time to know subnetting inside and out…

1. He didn’t have any ISDN questions. I’ve heard this echoed a few times, so it looks like even the “old” CCNA has pretty much dropped ISDN and it doesn’t seem to even be mentioned in the “new” objectives. Phew!

2. He did have frame relay and some tough ACL questions, so definitely know those. Also, PAT and NAT questions can be tricky on there, so be sure to brush up.

3. Subnetting, subnetting, subnetting! Basically, you HAVE to know how to subnet in your sleep and be able to do it quickly. There isn’t time to futz around, you just need to know it.

4. Other than that, mainly he said that there were a lot of “visual” questions that showed diagrams, so try to practice some of that type as well as the word-based ones. Know how Cisco diagrams a network as far as what symbols mean switches, hubs, and routers and how they label interfaces. Know how to read the output of the different show commands, particularly when it comes to show ip route.

Anyway, my tips for future test takers

-Lots of ACL
-Lots of Routing protocols (at least 2 questions on each)
-No ISDN (thank god)
-Couple Frame Relay
-General IOS navigation, show commands, configuration commands.
-Couple STP questions
-Lots of VLAN, VTP related
