Who is Prometric?
Prometric, part of Thomson Learning, is the global leader in the delivery of technology based examination and assessment services. Prometric delivers standardised exams for more than 180 clients through a network of more that 4200 test centres in 141 countries. For further information see the Prometric website.
What are computer-based exams?
Computer-based exams (CBEs) are simply exams delivered using computers. Thus instead of sitting down with pen and paper to answer questions read from an exam paper the candidate sits at a computer, reads the questions on the screen and uses a keyboard or mouse or both to select or type the answer.
It is possible to skip questions and return to them later, go back and change answers etc. A clock will display the time left throughout the duration of the exam.
When the candidate is satisfied that they have finished (or when the exam time is up) they submit their answers and within moments their result will be calculated and displayed to them.
Are exams invigilated?
Yes, exams are monitored by one invigilator at all times using at least one of the following methods:
Direct viewing of exam area, or
Viewing via parabolic mirror, or
Video monitoring, with or without audio, or
Other method sufficient to visually insure testing area security.
How does ISEB ensure that the candidate is who they say they are?
Authorised Prometric Test Centres (APTCs) have strict check-in procedures which include verification of either signed photo ID or other signed ID.
Candidates are required to sign a logbook at the beginning and end of the exam and before and after any breaks.
If a candidate has no valid ID they can ask ISEB to approve an alternate form of ID and ISEB will inform Prometric of the ID to be presented by the candidate. Candidates who do not produce a valid ID at the scheduled appointment will not be allowed to take the exam and will not receive a refund of the exam fee.
Where are ISEB computer-based exams available?
The ISEB CBEs are available world wide through the APTC network. Candidates can take an exam at an APTC convenient to them. A list of all the UK centres is available. However, as test centres change over time the best way of obtaining an up to date list of the centres in operation is to go to Prometric’s exam information site.
Select your area of study from the options provided and then select a country. Select “Locate a Test Site” and choose “Information Systems Examinations Board (ISEB)” from the client list and click “Next”. You will be taken to an ISEB information page, click “Next” to proceed. Select an exam – say IT Service Management Foundation Certificate (ITIL), and then select a language (the ISEB exams are only available in English at the moment).
The results of this search will show all the centres in the UK running the exam, with their address and contact details.
How does a candidate book an exam?
There are 3 steps to booguide an exam with Prometric:
The candidate must be registered with Prometric (see Registration below)
The exam the candidate wishes to sit must be paid for (see Payment below)
Once the above have been completed the exam can be booked (see Booguide below)
Registration
Registration is handled by geographical region. For example the UK is in the EMEA (Europe, Middle East and Africa) region. Registration and scheduling (maguide an exam appointment) can be carried out in the following ways where available:
Online at Prometric’s exam information site
By telephone, fax or email to the Regional Registration Centre (RRC) or the Candidate Services Call Centre (CSCC) in the US and Canada via a toll free number
By Interactive Voice Response (IVR)
At the APTC at which the candidate will take the test
Each regional area and each country within the area has different registration options. Further information about regional registration options is available under Registration & Scheduling.
Training Provider’s can, if they wish, carry out the Prometric Registration process for any of their delegates not already registered with Prometric. The following candidate information is required for registration:
Social Security Number (US only). Non-US citizens or those who do not wish to disclose their SSN will be allocated a unique Prometric Identification Number (SP#) the first time they register.
Candidates will require their SSN or their SP# every time they book any exam (not just an ISEB exam) with Prometric.
The candidate’s legal name (N. America & Canada) or the name the candidate would like it to appear on the certificate
Address (Street, City, State or Province, Country, Postal Code)
Phone Number
Other information such as email address, company name etc may be collected at the candidate’s discretion.
Payment
A variety of payment methods are available depending on the region or country and on the method of registration. These will be detailed for each region under the Registration & Scheduling.
They include payment by credit card, cheque or voucher at the time of registration, or agreement to pay, when invoiced, with pre-approved credit. Some locations require payment at the test centre. Pre-approved account payments and purchase orders are not available in locations where payment is collected at the test centre and payments by voucher require the test centre to confirm voucher validity with the Regional Registration Centre prior to scheduling the exam.
Training Providers may wish to purchase and issue vouchers for the relevant ISEB exam to their delegates which the delegate can redeem when they book their exam appointment. Vouchers are valid for 12 months from the date of purchase. Further information is available under Voucher Scheme.
Note: Fees for CBEs will be quoted to the candidate in their local currency
Booguide
Once a candidate is registered and has paid for the exam they can book an appointment (or the Training Provider can book it for them) at their preferred APTC at a time and date convenient to them. The following information is required for booguides:
Prometric Identification Number (SP#)
Name of exam and /or exam number
Preferred date of exam
When an appointment is made Prometric will provide instructions to the candidate about cancellation or rescheduling procedures, ID requirements, test centre location, and time needed for the exam and will answer any questions the candidate may have regarding the basic exam program structure or the general test centre processes. For any specific questions regarding the ISEB Certification Program the candidate will be given the contact details of the ISEB Exams Manager.
Will there still be paper-based exams for these ISEB qualifications?
ISEB computer based exams are an alternative to the existing paper-based exams and are being offered in addition to the traditional format and not instead of it.
Is there sample exams in the computer-based format available so candidates can familiarise themselves with the exam environment?
There are no sample CBE exams available at the moment. Sample paper copies of the exam are available for a small charge and details can be found on the specific qualification pages.
However, candidates will be able to take a brief tutorial before commencing the real exam once they have clocked in for their exam session at a Prometric centre. The tutorial will explain how the exam environment works, how to select answers, and how to change answers and submit answers.

ISEB (Information Systems Examinations Board) is a worldwide exam body and a part of the British Computer Society.
It began its life as a single qualification, the NCC (National Computing Centre) and BCS collaborated on developing the ‘Certificate in Systems Analysis and Design’ for the Systems Analysis Examination Board.
By the mid 1980′s this one qualification accounted for about 1000 candidates a year.
Despite the relative success of this one qualification, the Systems Analysis Examination Board wanted more, in 1989 it was decided to develop a Project Management qualification, the development of further qualifications was not far away and with this progress, the Systems Analysis Examination Board made the decision to change its name to Information Systems Examination Board, and is generally known as ISEB today.
