Hi everyone,

Welcome to 2009! We here at Oracle University are excited about what lies ahead – even amidst this challenging economic phase we’re in. I talk directly about that in an article here called “Certain Measures for Uncertain Times.”

Certain Measures for Uncertain Times

The unsettling news of the global economy is unwelcome to IT professionals looking to improve their careers. It seems that during tougher economic times – not only are there fewer opportunities for promotions, training or new/challenging projects, but sometimes even earning a living can become an issue.

A typical response for most of us is to scale back our spending as much as possible and only spend or invest where it’s most wise. For many Oracle IT professionals, a smart and inexpensive way to invest in your career and touch up your resume during a rough economy is to get or add an Oracle certification. By going through the process to earn an Oracle certification process, you improve your skills and knowledge, gain confidence, and add to your professional credibility. Oracle certification may help provide that differentiation and credibility that you need to get a new job or keep the one you have.

Several situations might make you consider getting certified now:

1. You are an experienced Oracle IT professional but have never considered certification.
2. You are already certified, but on an old version.
3. You are already certified and there is an add-on Expert (OCE) track available in your technology domain.

Not Certified:

If you have taken Oracle training, have the skills, knowledge and experience, but have never gotten certified – you might strongly consider certification. There are lots of options, and in most instances you can get started without a mandatory training requirement. This by the way, is a perfect time for OCAs who have never completed OCP to consider finishing their certification.
Certified on an old version:

Version upgrades typically (1) don’t have a mandatory training requirement (although training is recommended if your knowledge is not strong), and (2) usually only require that you pass a single exam. In cases where you are behind multiple versions, Oracle often offers bridge exams that enable you to skip a version when you upgrade.
Expert Track:

Oracle has a growing number of add-ons to our database tracks. Consider highlighting advanced skills by specializing in RAC or Performance Tuning . Additionally there are many stand-alone Expert Tracks that might fit your domain and provide you with additional credibility (such as SQL Expert or 11i Workflow Expert ).

Please note that I am not advocating that the paper credential alone will get you a new job; however as I’ve mentioned before, the process that you go through to become certified – along with the recognition that the credential brings – improves the chances that you will do better in a tough economy, especially if you are already an experienced Oracle IT Professional. It’s a relatively inexpensive investment that can only help you move your career forward – even in tough economic times.

Upgrading Your Oracle Application Certification

REMINDER– you have a straightforward upgrade path if you hold any Oracle application certification based upon a previous version, such as Siebel 7.7 and 11i E-Business Suite.

When upgrading your application certification, you have two things that are working in your favor:

1. When upgrading your application certification, you are not required to meet a new mandatory hands-on course requirement, as is required of initial certification candidates.
2. Your upgrade only requires you to take a single exam in order to upgrade. For example, 11i certificate holders DO NOT need to retake the E-Business Essentials exam in order to upgrade.

We have tried to streamline the path for those who are already certified as much as possible. I encourage you to take advantage of this streamlined path to upgrade your certification.

Oracle Internet Application Developer Rel. 6i Certified Professional (OCP)
6i Certification To Be Retired April 30, 2009

The Oracle Internet Application Developer Rel. 6i Certified Professional (OCP) certification and its related exams will be retired effective April 30, 2009. Exams for this certification may taken up to this date, after which time they will no longer be available through Prometric or any other avenue.

Those working with Oracle PL/SQL and Forms should consider the newer Oracle PL/SQL Developer Certified Associate (OCA), Oracle Advanced PL/SQL Developer Certified Professional (OCP), and Oracle Forms Developer Certified Professional (OCP) certifications.
EXAM RETIREMENTS:

Oracle will retire the following four related exams:

* 1Z0-001 – Introduction to Oracle: SQL and PL/SQL
* 1Z0-101 – Develop PL/SQL Program Units
* 1Z0-131 – Build Internet Applications I
* 1Z0-132 – Build Internet Applications II

Exams 1Z0-001 and 1Z0-101 are recognized toward several Oracle certifications that are not being retired. Exams passed prior to April 30, 2009 will be accepted and will count towards any track not retired.
ALTERNATES FOR EXAM 1Z0-001:

Exam 1Z0-001 is just one of four SQL-related exam options. The three other exams that may be taken in lieu of this exam are:

* 1Z0-007 – Introduction to Oracle9i SQL
* 1Z0-047 – Oracle Database SQL Expert
* 1Z0-051 – Oracle Database 11g: SQL Fundamentals I

6i CERTIFICATION VALIDITY :

Note that the Internet Application Developer Rel. 6i OCP certification credential remains valid indefinitely. This retirement therefore has no effect on those currently holding the certification as well as those who complete the certification requirements and earn the certification before April 30.

On January 24 2009, Oracle’s new exam for the Oracle EBS R12 Applications Database Administrator Certified Professional (OCP) certification goes live. Exam 1Z0-238 – Oracle EBS R12: Install, Patch and Maintain Applications will be available for testing worldwide through Prometric Testing. Score and pass/fail information will be immediately available at the end of the exam.

Those who earn this certification have demonstrated the complete set of skills required for working independently not only in the role of database administrator, but also in administering many of the components for the Oracle Applications Release R12 and database versions Oracle10g and Oracle11g.

Exam 1Z0-238 is the only exam required to upgrade your Oracle 10g or 11g Database Administrator OCP to the new Oracle EBS R12 Applications Database Administrator Certified Professional (OCP) . This exam is the only exam required to earn the new PeopleSoft Enterprise 9 Human Capital Management, Human Resources Consultant Certified Expert (OCE) certification, which endorses candidate proficiency and knowledge in implementing, configuring and customizing the PeopleSoft Enterprise Human Resources Management System.

Beta testing for the PeopleSoft Enterprise 9 General Ledger exam 1Z1-228 closed on December 1, 2008. With post-beta analysis and preparations for final publication currently under way, final release is expected in early February under new exam number 1Z0-228. At that time, the exam will be available for testing worldwide through Prometric Testing, with score and pass/fail information immediately available at the end of the exam. Beta test results will also begin to be issued in mid-late February, awarding those who passed the beta exam with full credit for final exam completion.

Exam 1Z0-228 is the only exam required to earn the PeopleSoft Enterprise 9 Financial Management, General Ledger Consultant Certified Expert (OCE) certification, which endorses candidates’ proficiency and knowledge in key areas of implementation such as Oracle general ledger financial controls, journal entry creation and setup, period close and financial reporting.

Although training is not required, the General Ledger Rel 9 course (D47967GC30) is an excellent way to build your knowledge and skills to pass exam 1Z0-228.
