What Chrome means for Microsoft

Aiming to react quickly to Google's Chrome announcement, Microsoft focused on how Chrome stacks up against Internet Explorer. "The browser landscape is highly competitive, but people will choose Internet Explorer 8 for the way it puts the services they want right at their fingertips, respects their personal choices about how they want to browse and, more than any other browsing technology, puts them in control of their personal data online," Internet Explorer General Manager Dean Hachamovitch said in a statement. googlechromewinnersand losers

Right now I know as much about Google's new Chrome browser as everyone else - which is to say, I've read the comic book and the relevant blog postings. Our own Sam Dean has a good roundup of the facts as they are known so far, and when the code actually ships, we'll bring you coverage of how it works. But let's assume for the moment that Google delivers everything they promise: what effect will this have on the wider market? Full story

Three reasons Google Chrome could be the netbook browser of choice

I finally got a chance to read through the great comic book explanation of  Chrome, the new browser from Google. The beta browser is scheduled to hit today for Windows devices, although the team is working on a version for Mac and Linux users as well. I highly recommend reading through the browser description: it's as fun presentation as it is informative. As I read through it, I saw that James was wondering aloud how well Chrome will run on a netbook. I began to make an early judgment which coincides with a scheduled delivery of my newest netbook tomorrow: Google Chrome could easily be the netbook browser of choice for many. Full story

Ten Questions About Google Chrome

Four years ago, I blogged about rumors that Google was working on a Web browser. I found ‘em intriguing, as anyone would, but no such browser ever appeared, and Google became an enthusiastic Firefox booster. The blogosphere pretty much stopped pondering the possibility of a Google browser, and so did I. Today brings news that the rumors were apparently premature, not wrong: Google Blogoscoped has published ... Full story

The cloud’s Chrome lining

Google's release today of a test version of its new open-source web browser, Chrome, marks an important moment in the ongoing shift of personal computing from the PC hard drive to the Internet "cloud." I distinctly remember when, back in 1988, Apple Computer added MultiFinder to its Macintosh operating system, allowing my beloved Mac Plus to run more than one application at a time. That was, for us Mac users, anyway, a very big deal. Chrome - if we can trust the comic book - promises a similar leap in the capacity of the cloud to run applications speedily, securely, and simultaneously. Indeed, it is the first browser built from the ground up with the idea of running applications rather than displaying pages. It takes the browser's file-tab metaphor, a metaphor reflecting the old idea of the web as a collection of pages, and repurposes it for application multitasking. Chrome is the first cloud browser. The Chrome is out of the bag: Google’s browser arrives Tuesday

We believe Kara Swisher of the All Things Digital blog was first to pick up on Google's official announcement: Chrome is real. Earlier today Swisher also had the first confirmation from sources that the launch of the browser was imminent. It's not an elaborate hoax. It's a bona fide product and it will be available for download Tuesday. We'll have a hands-on review as soon as we get some time to explore the product. Full story
