Dynamips, also known as “Cisco 7200 Simulator”, achieves simulation by simulating hardware, which is similar to VMware. It also supports NIC bridging mode, thus realize communication with Ethernet cards of the host. With OmniPeek you can see the protocol data packet. Based on this, the idea of using VMware + Dynamips to simulate WAN experimental environment germinated. In this way, Cisco engineers can also carry through 7 layer experiments on single pc, such as QoS, 7 layer security experiments. Full story

The 0.2.8-RC2 release is available. It’s mainly a bug fix release that requires no Dynagen upgrade (except for the ATM/Ethernet bridge). New feature: Ethernet/ATM bridge, conforming to the RFC1483 (bridged mode). I added this because I’ve this kind of devices on my network (xDSL modem). It will require a Dynagen upgrade to be usable. Bug-fixes: Fixed a PowerPC JIT bug that caused crashes on some 2600 images and prevented OSPF to work correctly on this platform ; Fixed handling of CRC for WIC slots on 2691/3725/3745 ; Fixed a bootflash malfunction occuring on 3600/7200 platforms ; Added TCP keepalives for VTTY connections (ie console and aux ports) ; Added ISL support for 2691/3725/3745 on-board Ethernet ports. All users of dynamips must have figured out by now that you can use NM16-ESW module for using switching commands on router, however, those are really restricted only to vlan database mode, however, not so now Full story
